Now many of you reading this are my client and have been training with me a while if not just started training with me. Think about your first session. It probably wasn't as tough as you thought it would be or maybe it was really tough. But can you remember how you felt after, the next day or even 2 days after? Yes. That's D.O.M.S.
D.O.M.S is that feeling that a lot of us have experienced 24 - 48 hours after a hard workout. Sometimes it usually lasts for 96 hours. It's that stiffness that some of us love because it makes us feel like we have worked hard but for others, its the reason why we struggle to get out of bed on some mornings and I totally understand that.
So the soreness that we experience can be a result of a number of factors including, the intensity of exercise, how much a muscle has been stretched under resistance and most times its a case of the body being unaccustomed to the exercises.
Thing is we know what types of exercises can cause D.O.M.S however, the truth behind post - exercise soreness is a big mystery yet to be solved and when it solved, I will have the answer for you. No-one has come up with clear explanations to the mechanisms behind D.O.M.S although there are a few research with a number or combinations of the possible / accurate reason why we get D.O.M.S.
To summarise, D.O.M.S is unavoidable most times due to the fact when we work at an intensity that our body is not used to then the soreness comes or even an exercise that our body is unaccustomed to.
In my personal experience, here are somethings you can do to minimise the effect of D.O.M.S. Maybe increase recovery;
Warm Up properly before workout
Stretch after a workout and continue stretching throughout the day
There you have it guys. Just a small lesson on D.O.M.S as you get on with your daily activities. I will update you on these type of things as I learn more so thank you for reading.
